Privacy notice
How I handle your details when you contact me through this website or by email. Last updated 17 October 2026.
Who I am
Alexander Hoppe, a freelance lighting designer and sound engineer based in London. I decide how your details are used and am responsible for them. Contact me at [email protected] about anything in this notice.
What I collect
When you use the contact form: your name, email address and message, and anything else you choose to give (company or production, type of enquiry, dates, venue). I also record the time you sent it and the IP address it came from.
When you email me directly: whatever is in your email, including your address.
This site does not use analytics, does not set cookies and loads nothing from third-party servers.
Why I use it
To read and reply to your enquiry, and to arrange work if we go ahead. The lawful basis is taking steps at your request before entering a contract, or my legitimate interest in replying to people who contact me.
The IP address is used only to limit how many messages one connection can send and to filter spam, which is in my legitimate interest in keeping the form usable.
I don't add you to a mailing list or use your details for marketing.
Spam filtering and AI
Each message is checked against simple rules for spam. Messages that pass are then sent to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, which classifies the message as genuine or spam, summarises it, and drafts a reply for me.
The draft is never sent to you automatically. I read it, edit it and send my own reply. No decision about you is made by the AI; it doesn't decide whether I see your message or what I say.
Messages the rules mark as almost certainly spam are stored but not emailed to me or sent to Claude.
Who else handles it
The form and the database that stores enquiries run on servers I operate in the UK. Three companies also handle your details on my behalf:
- Cloudflare — carries traffic between your browser and this site.
- Resend — delivers the email that tells me about your enquiry.
- Anthropic — runs the AI model described above. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, content sent through its API is not used to train its models.
These companies may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer relies on the safeguards UK data protection law requires, such as the UK–US data bridge or the ICO's international data transfer agreement.
I don't sell or share your details with anyone else.
How long I keep it
The stored copy of an enquiry sent through the form is deleted automatically two years after it arrives. Spam is deleted after 90 days.
Your enquiry also reaches me as an email, and emails you send me directly sit in my inbox. I keep those as ordinary correspondence for as long as I need them to deal with your enquiry and any work that follows, and delete them on request unless I'm required to keep them.
If we work together, our correspondence may be kept longer where I need it for invoicing and tax records, which UK law requires me to keep for six years.
Your rights
You can ask me for a copy of the details I hold about you, and ask me to correct them, delete them, or stop or limit how I use them. You can also object to my using them on the basis of legitimate interests. Email [email protected] and I'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how I've handled your details, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
